Steinberg Inc

Steinberg Inc was a diversified Canadian retailing organization with head offices in Montréal. It was incorporated in 1930 as Steinberg's Limited, and adopted its present name in 1978. Between 1958 and 1981 the company expanded by acquiring other enterprises, including the entire chain of Grand Union stores in Ontario. It had several wholly owned subsidiaries, including Steinberg Foods Limited. It was engaged in food retailing and manufacturing, general merchandise retailing and real estate. Among other enterprises, it or its subsidiaries operated over 300 supermarkets and grocery stores, 24 department stores, over 150 restaurants and 35 shopping centres. In 1987, it had sales or operating revenue of $4.5 billion, assets of $1.5 billion and more than 36 000 employees.

In early 1988, despite a well-publicized family feud, the company was still 88% owned by Steinberg family trusts. It was taken over by Socanav in 1989, and was promptly dismantled with pieces of the empire sold off to varying interests.
