Alberta Order of Excellence

The Alberta Order of Excellence Act was accorded royal assent in the Alberta Legislature on 16 November 1979 and named the lieutenant-governor of Alberta as chancellor of the order. The Alberta Order of Excellence is the highest honour the province of Alberta can bestow on a citizen and was established "to accord recognition to those persons who have rendered service of the greatest distinction and of singular excellence for or on behalf of the residents of Alberta."

The Alberta Order of Excellence Council considers the nominations of candidates to the Alberta Order of Excellence. The council is made up of prominent volunteer representatives appointed by Order-in-Council from across Alberta. Nominations are accepted and considered year round and remain under consideration indefinitely.

Members are inducted into the order at a special ceremony at Government House in Edmonton. The lieutenant-governor of Alberta presents the new members with a silver, gilt and enamel medallion attached to a ribbon, distinctive to the province, which is worn around the neck. Newly invested members are also presented with a miniature of the insignia design. Members of the order are entitled to use the post-nominals AOE.
