The James Norris Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the player selected by hockey writers as the best defenceman in the National Hockey League. It was first presented in 1953 by the children of James Norris, former owner of the Detroit Red Wings. Denis Potvin, Paul Coffey and Chris Chelios have each won the trophy 3 times. Ray Bourque has won it 5 times. Doug Harvey won it 7 times. From 1968 to 1975, Bobby Orr won the Norris 8 years in a row.
Harvey was the greatest defenceman of his era, controlling the tempo of the game with pinpoint passing, subtle playmaking and dramatic rushes.
