Streatfeild, Simon
Simon (Nicholas) Streatfeild. Conductor, violist, b Windsor, England, 5 Oct 1929; ARCM 1949. After viola studies 1946-50 with Frederick Riddle at the RCM he played in the London Philharmonic, was principal viola of the Sadler's Wells Orchestra and the London SO, and was a founding member of the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields chamber orchestra. After moving to Canada he served 1965-9 as principal viola, 1967-71 as assistant conductor, 1971-2 as acting music director, and 1972-7 as associate conductor of the
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Streatfeild has been guest conductor of the City of Birmingham SO, the Scottish National and various BBC orchestras, the Royal Choral Society, the Belgian and Danish radio orchestras, and the Poznan, Oslo and Seoul philharmonic orchestras. In Canada he has appeared with the
NACO, the
TS, the
NYO, and the
OJQ among others. He was a founding member 1966-8 of the
Baroque Strings of Vancouver and the founding director 1967-9 of the
Courtenay Youth Music Camp. He was conductor and director 1969-81 of the
Vancouver Bach Choir. A founding member 1968-9 of the
Purcell String Quartet, he later rejoined the quartet as second viola for its series of recordings of the Mozart and Brahms string quintets. Streatfeild was a visiting professor 1977-81 at the
University of Western Ontario. He conducted the
Regina Symphony Orchestra 1981-4, and became conductor and director of the
Manitoba Chamber Orchestra in 1982. He was named conductor and director and of the
Quebec Symphony Orchestra in 1983, and, after a transitional year divided between the Regina and Quebec SOs, he took up regular duties with the Quebec SO in 1984, where he remained until 1991, when he left the orchestra due to differences with its administration. He was named artistic director of the
Guelph Spring Festival in 1989. He was awarded the
Canadian Music Council Medal in 1987.
