Plamondon, Lucien
Lucien Plamondon. Cellist, teacher, b Paris ca 1907. He studied the cello with Francis Touche at the Paris Conservatory and appeared as soloist at the Touche concerts and with the Paris Symphony Orchestra. He was the original principal cello of the CSM orchestra (MSO) and he played the Schumann Concerto with the orchestra 29 Nov 1935. Marcel Valois wrote at that time: 'His playing shows the greatest authority. He is an honest and sincere artist' (La Presse, 30 Nov 1935). In 1936 he performed the Elgar Concerto with the Montreal Orchestra. A member of the Société de musique de chambre Euterpe and 1928-30 of the Durieux String Quartet, he also gave numerous concerts on the CRBC (later CBC). In 1930 he made a Canadian tour with his father, Rodolphe, and at the Windsor Hotel, Montreal, he premiered Rodolphe Mathieu's Sonata with the composer at the piano. In 1940 he was a cellist in Erno Rapee's orchestra at Radio City Music Hall, New York. Later, he was a member of the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, and ca 1953 he began teaching at the CMQ. It is not known whether he pursued his musical career further. Pierre Bernier (see Bernier family), Marcel Saint-Cyr, and Cécile Lanneville (Prix d'Europe 1963), to whom he gave his Maggini cello, were among his pupils.
